Traditionally, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year celebration needs to include hanging some new paintings on the wall, as many believe artwork not only adds colors to the festival but can also push away bad luck.

But that habit has been fading out over the years.

Tet Art ,” the country’s first contemporary art market for the Lunar New Year, is trying to bring back the tradition, with a new touch.

Though an art fair for Tet, it does not display traditional woodcut paintings.

Instead it showcases 350 pieces, many of them experimental, including lacquer paintings, graphic designs and also sculptures by more than 80 indie artists.

There are also portrait and scenery pieces, and animal pieces that feature the goat, which is the zodiac animal of the new lunar year.

The art fair is organized by realism painter Trinh Minh Tien and Doan Phuong Lien , a volunteer with Nha San Collective , a studio for experimental art in Hanoi.

Prices range between VND500,000 and VND20 million (US$23.5-940), but the organizers do not put a price or name tag on each piece.

We want people coming here to feel and evaluate art with their pure perception ,” Lien said.

The market is boasted as the biggest art event for this Lunar New Year.

It will stay open for free at Hang Da Galleria at No .1 Hang Da Street , Hoan Kiem District, until this Sunday.

There will be two talk shows on Saturday with famous painter Thanh Chuong over the issue of copyright and with Le Thiet Cuong , a pioneer of contemporary art in Vietnam, over the art market in the country and the world.
