Le Thiet Cuong

Le Thiet Cuong was born in 1962 in Hanoi. His father, Le Nguyen, was a well respected film playwright, scriptwriter and poet and his mother, Do Phuong Thao was a famous cinematographer. As a young child, Cuong moved with his family to Binh Da village, where they escaped the American bombing of Hanoi. Cuong attended the Vietnam State Film College from 1985 – 1990 and graduated with a degree in set design and animation.

Cuong began to study Tay Tang Buddhism (a Tibetan sect) after his graduation from college and his meditation and devotion to these studies has profoundly influenced his work. Cuong is an accomplished painter, sculptor and painter. His paintings are typically graphic with a seemingly simplistic style infused with a sense of humor. His paintings are often based on three basic shapes, the square, circle and triangle and he works to develop contrasting co-relations between the objects. “Beauty is balancing instability, harmony, contradiction, symmetry and asymmetry.” Cuong’s paintings, sculpture and photography have been exhibited around the world and are in numerous public and museum museum collections including the new Southeast Asian art collection at the Singapore National Museum.

“My art is a creation of my mind and heart using my hands as tools to skillfully interpret and follow my dreams.” Le Thiet Cuong

When standing in front of a river, was the emotion of an artist of the 17th centen standing in front of a river, was the emotion of an artist of the 17th century any different from that of today’s artist?

All is the new view.

That is the nirvana of arts.

The eyes must have doubt about themselves and must learn to change.

If the eye was differently constructed the sun would have been a blue square.

Each time the eye opens that is always the first time.

The eye creates the world.

Le Thiet Cuong
